Breast Support

Lady McAdden provides two main services for women 18 and over. We provide specialist nurse appointments, by video or telephone. for women who want to learn how to check their breasts and be more breast aware.

We support women who are looking for immediate advice, information and support because they have found something out of the ordinary, and they are worried or concerned. Not every lump or change automatically means you have breast cancer. Our nurses are trained to help women of all ages understand their own breasts, what’s normal for them, and how to check regularly for any changes that might need a second look. The risk of breast cancer does increase with age, rising steadily from the menopause. Make your appointment today because it’s #timetocheck

The importance of checking regularly

For many, many women, Lady McAdden provides hope and peace of mind. With at least 49% of women saying they do not check their breasts regularly. 42% of women do not know how to check themselves properly; this means many women of all ages are not familiar with their own breasts, how they feel, what they look like and how they change through their menstrual cycle. 46% of women say they forget to check. 10% have never checked at all. In short, too women don’t know what’s normal for them and don’t prioritise breast health at all.

With our busy lives, juggling work, families, our parents’ needs, many women simply do not want to trouble a doctor or take time out to make and obtain an appointment at their local surgery. Lady McAdden is the only service where you can access a specially trained nurse without a referral from your GP, bringing peace of mind and information quickly. Women often comment that this service is friendly and conducted in a comfortable atmosphere; it’s unrushed with plenty of time for a proper conversation, and without feeling you are bothering anyone unnecessarily.

Our unique service offers you a one-to-one appointment with our specialist nurses, without a GP referral. Many women return to us year after year to gain the reassurance they need or just to get practice with the help of a professional.

A Breast Awareness appointment will enable you to attend a one-to-one appointment with a Lady McAdden nurse, that lasts approximately 15-20 minutes via secure video conference or on the phone. Our face-to-face appointments for local women will resume once the pandemic situation has changed. The appointment will cover how to know what is normal for you, how to check your breasts effectively, what to look for and what to do if you find something.

Our nurses know what to help you with and can give you excellent advice. They can’t refer you directly to your own GP but they can signpost you back to your own surgery and coach you what to say to get an appointment, to make sure you are heard, that your concerns are taken seriously and how to ensure that, if required, your GP will refer you on to the breast clinic.

If you have any changes to your breasts or suspect any abnormality, then you should still seek advice from your GP first, if at all possible.

Lady McAdden is not part of the NHS but we work closely with the NHS and follow the NHS Breast Screening 5 Point Plan for being breast aware. This is simply:

Attend routine screening if you’re 50 or over (or 40 via Lady McAdden)

knowing how to self check for breast cancer is important

Almost half of newly diagnosed Breast Cancers are detected by the lady herself. Mammograms are important as they can indicate cancers that are too small to be felt by the woman herself or a doctor. This is why being Breast Aware is so important.

The Lady McAdden Mammogram service is currently suspended due to current Coronavirus restrictions. If you would like to be updated when we have news about this service, please fill in the form on our Contact Page.
